Exhibition “Interweaving Climate, Water(s), and Communities”
"Interweaving Climate, Water(s) and Communities" begins in the Steppes of Saryarka on the shores of Lake Balkhash, set within the nomadic cultural landscape. Originally part of the International Water and Climate Forum "Balkhash 2024: Challenges and Solutions" organised by Artcom Platform and Care for Balkhash. The exhibition now continues in Almaty in partnership with Aspan Gallery.
Recognizing the impact of the global climate crisis, the exhibition brings together artists from Central Asia, Indonesia, and Australia as another step toward global climate and ecological solidarity, and practices of care for the fragile ecosystems of the transboundary Lake Balkhash basin.
At the exhibition “Interweaving Climate, Water(s) and Communities,” artists delve and reflect on the interconnections of local communities and biodiversity as keepers of collective memory. Bodies of water are reimagined as living archives, preserving the continuity of rituals and technologies amid shifting socio-economic and climatic realities.
By embracing diverse perspectives, knowledge systems, and historical contexts that shape the cultural landscape, the exhibition invites a rethinking of socio-natural interactions, a deeper understanding of aquatic spaces, and the evolving dynamics of hydro-social relationships. It calls for a revaluation of strategies through decolonial imagination, offering new paths forward for sustainable futures.
Art Collider Balkhash x Almaty — an open program of the interdisciplinary art and science school held alongside the international exhibition "Weaving Climate, Waters, and Communities." The exhibition is organized by Artcom Platform and Balqashqa Qamqor in partnership with Aspan Gallery.
The program explores the impact of climate risks and water scarcity on local communities, proposing a rethinking of socio-natural relations and strategies for caring for the ecosystems of Central Asia.
The school explores the interdependence of the city of Almaty as part of the transboundary Balkhash-Alakol basin, water routes, the cultural landscape, and the importance of local communities’ involvement in preserving the fragile ecosystems of Lake Balkhash.
Experts, scientists, academics, and cultural figures will discuss the current challenges of the region, share experiences and practices in pursuit of ecological and climate justice for sustainable futures.
